The famous island monastery, favourite destination for medieval
pilgrims, makes a striking impression for miles around . With a circumference of
800m and height of 150m, it features a gilt statue of the Archangel Michael
perched on top of the abbey church, and a 1.5km long causeway connecting the
island to the mainland. The abbey was built between the 11th and 12th
century and comprises a church (1020) and the wonderful Gothic buildings of the
Merveille. The north wing of ‘The Merveille’ house both cloister and
refectory. This site, and the charming ville just below the monastery, are
frequently packed with tourists in the busy summer months.

| Dinan

Dinan is a
medieval town on the River Rance which is full of historic buildings and
wonderful shops. The old port is very pretty with a good selection of
restaurants and small specialist shops. The old trading vessels have
now been replaced by modern sailing boats which line the quayside. The
steep, twisting, cobbled streets leading up to the old town are lined with
pale pink and yellow, tall, shuttered houses. Once in the old town,
you are spoilt for choice with all the shops, bars and
restaurants. There is a market on Thursdays. Every other year, during the
summer, the town is transformed back to the medieval era with goats and
geese roaming the streets. All the ancient crafts are on display and
the castle holds a jousting festival. |
